Hannover Rückversicherung SE, commonly abbreviated as Hannover Re, is a German-based reinsurer operating in more than 150 countries, mainly belonging to the Talanx AG group.
It is considered the third largest reinsurer in the world, with a gross premium in excess of 33 billion euros, offering casualty, life and non-life and property reinsurance lines, positioned in countries around the world through 170 offices, subsidiaries and branches, with more than 3,500 employees.
It was founded in 1966 as ATR (Aktiengesellschaft für Transport- und Rückversicherung) by the company "Feuerschadenverband Rheinisch-Westfälischer Zechen" (FSV), providing marine insurance, moving to Hannover in 1970 when it merged with HDI, creating subsidiaries in the United States and the United Kingdom from 1979 onwards.
In 1990, they expanded their life and health business by acquiring the Reassurance Company of Hannover (RCH) and the portfolio of Hamburger Internationale Rückversicherung (HIR), and the following year they opened the Hannover Re Arts Foundation, where they support contemporary art.
In 2001 the group is affected by the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, overcoming the event with little income, changing its name to "Hannover Rückversicherung AG" becoming a European stock corporation (SE) in 2013.
