Description of the company

Continental AG, a leader in the automotive industry, specifically in the production of tires and electronic safety systems, develops technologies and services associated with mobility, vehicles, transportation, traffic and machinery, is considered the fourth largest company in its field after Michelin, Bridgestone and Goodyear, and owns brands such as Euzkadi, Viking, Continental, General Tire, Gislaved, Semperit, Barum, and Mabor.

Its beginnings date back to 1871 with the foundation of "Continental-Caoutchouc und Gutta-Percha Compagnie" as a joint-stock company, in 1892 it positioned itself as the first German company to create bicycle tires and in 1898 it expanded its activities to the manufacture of tires for vehicles, after some problems during the post-war period, the company managed to revive to the point that in 1982 it entered into partnerships with American consortiums, and bought Semperit's tire division in Austria, as well as its subsidiaries, resisting a strong takeover attempt by Pirelli tires in 1993.

In 1995 they open the CAS division "Continental Automotive Systems" where they manufacture electronically controlled chassis, tire pressure, acceleration sensors and safety systems for the vehicle, later in 2006 they include a part of Motorola's business dedicated to automotive electronics, growing to the rest of America in 2009 when they buy "ERCO the Ecuadorian Rubber Company S.A." changing it to Continental Tire Andina S.A.

The company currently has several divisions, specializing in the manufacture of tires for passenger and commercial vehicles, technical elastomers, braking and chassis systems, driver and passenger interior protection, traction and comfort electronics.
