Merck KGaA, is an important multinational company specialized in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and chemicals, has its headquarters in Germany, being one of the oldest in the world and is known as Merk KGaA, which indicates that it is a limited stock company.

Its origins are associated with the acquisition of the Angel Pharmacy (Engel-Apotheke) in 1668 by Friedrich Jacob Merck, producing in 1827 chemical products, alkaloids and some plant extracts, which generated much success, allowing it to export its products to the United States some sixty years later, thus opening its first international subsidiary in New York, forming Merk & Co. in 1891.

Due to the consequences of World War I, it becomes an American company with rights within North America, operating in other countries under the name of Merck KGaA, or MSD Sharp & Dohme.

The company made a series of acquisitions highlighting the acquisition of Serono in 2006, thereby strengthening its market in Switzerland, obtaining strengths in the biotechnology industry, in 2010, meanwhile, they bought Millipore Corporation joining the chemical division of Merck and in 2014 that of the Sigma-Aldrich group, an important manufacturer of chemical components located mainly in the United States.
