The current version of the company is founded in 1968 through the merger between the Schoolbook publishing house created in the Netherlands in 1836 and Noordhoff, which together formed ICU, changing its name to Wolters Samson in 1983, a company that was dedicated to providing legal services to law firms and multinationals in China, changing its name again when associated with Kluwer in 1987 in a move to try to avoid being absorbed by the publisher Elsevier.

It expanded internationally into the Spanish, German and French markets, acquiring a variety of brands such as IPSOA Editore, Technipublications, as well as CT Corporation, CCH Inc, Prentice Hall Law & Business from Simon & Schuster, reaching the United States, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia and Singapore, managing over time to diversify its activities.

Currently its global headquarters is located in Alphen Aan Den Rijn, Netherlands and its corporate headquarters is located in Philadelphia, United States, has clients in more than 180 countries with operations in 40 of them, having an approximate 20 thousand employees worldwide, reporting in 2022 annual revenues of nearly 5,500 million euros.
