It was created in 2016 through the merger of two corporations Delhaize Group whose origin dates back to 1867, owned by the Delhaize brothers in Belgium and Ahold which had operated since 1887 originally named Albert Heijn NV operating as a modern specialty store.

Despite the fact that one of the countries of origin of its predecessors was Belgium, the company's growth has been slow in that country, expanding significantly internationally, especially in 2018 in the United States, also in 2020 they partner with Instacart to offer home delivery service and from 2021 implements Ship2Me to add e-commerce service.

It currently owns a wide variety of brands located in various parts of the world such as Albert, Albert Heijn, bol.com, Delhaize, EnaFood, Etos, FoodLion, FreshDirect, Gall&Gall, Giant, Hannaford, Maxi, Mega Image, Peapod, Pingo Doce, Retail Business, Stop&Shop, Tempo, super Indo, among others.
