It was founded in 1987 after the merger between SGS Microelettronica (of Italian origin) and Thomson Semiconducteurs (of French origin) buying in 1989 the British company Inmos and later the semiconductor unit of Nortel, changing the name of the group to STMicroelectronics in 1998 because the company Thomson S.A. decided to separate.
