STMicroelectronics N.V., a global company of Italian-French origin, is active in the semiconductor industry.

It was founded in 1987 after the merger between SGS Microelettronica (of Italian origin) and Thomson Semiconducteurs (of French origin) buying in 1989 the British company Inmos and later the semiconductor unit of Nortel, changing the name of the group to STMicroelectronics in 1998 because the company Thomson S.A. decided to separate.

The company has a broad portfolio of services and products, including: Microcontrollers, Microprocessors, Standard Consumer Products (ASSPs), such as MPEG-2/MPEG-4 decoders, Computer peripheral ASICs (hard disk drives or printers), NOR and NAND flash memory, Smart Cards, Analog integrated circuits, MEMS semiconductors, ASICs for wireless communications and Automotive specific products.

It is structured in four business lines: the product group, which in turn is subdivided into five areas, where the design, manufacture and marketing of its products are carried out; the sales department; the corporate research and development group; and the manufacturing facilities.

Headquartered in Switzerland, it has a team of more than 50 thousand people, more than 9 thousand engineers working in the research and development unit and more than 200 thousand customers worldwide such as Bosch, DaimlerChrysler, Visteon, Siemens, Nokia, Motorola, Hewlett-Packard, Alcatel, Nortel Networks, Seagate Technology, Western Digital, Philips, Sony, Thomson, Siemens, Arrow Electronics, among many others.
