It was created in 1472 in the ancient Republic of Siena, with the purpose of offering a mount of pity, where the victims of the plague were helped and usury was fought, expanding its functions in 1559 when Siena was annexed to Florence, thus forming the Duchy of Tuscany, including activities related to credit for farmers, as well as pawning, becoming a public bank in 1580.
In 1624 it was reformed by the Grand Duke Ferdinand II de Medici, extending its activities throughout Italy, and by 2008 it was positioned as the third largest bank in the country, currently having more than 3 thousand branches, subsidiaries and other international businesses, with more than 21 thousand employees, serving 4.5 million customers, with the Italian State as its largest shareholder.
Its services are mainly based on retail and commercial banking, operating through several proprietary companies that specialize in business areas such as corporate finance, factoring, leasing and investment banking, integrating traditional models with digital and self-service services, also supporting internationalization processes of its business clients.
