Umicore S.A., formerly known as Union Minière, is engaged in the circular materials technology industry, specializing in the refining and recycling of metals and the creation of other technical products based on precious metals such as zinc, germanium and cobalt, with activities in chemistry and metallurgy, and has also diversified into the mining sector.

Its origins come from UMHK which explored the natural reserves of the Congo, focused on copper deposits, then moving on to tin and uranium, which continued to grow and was nationalized in 1967, eventually becoming part of the conglomerate Société Générale de Belgique, changing its name to Union Minière and being renamed Umicore in 2001.

It is headquartered in Belgium, but has offices in Belgium, Germany, Finland, Poland, has 44 operational laboratories or factories and 15 technical research and development sites, working with more than 11 thousand employees, recording 4,155 million euros in revenues in 2022.
