Enel S.p.A., originally "Ente nazionale per l'energia elettrica", is a multinational company that produces and distributes electricity and gas.

It was founded in 1962 as a public entity, and converted to a joint stock company (SpA) in 1992, being privatized in 1999 after the Italian electricity market was liberalized, although the Italian State still retains shares and part of the company's capital stock through the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

The company is divided into five business units:

  • Global Infrastructure and Network: responsible for creating and managing the infrastructure necessary to carry out its operations.
  • Enel Green Power and Thermal Generation: In charge of electricity generation.
  • Enel X Global Retail: dedicated to offering value-added services.
  • Global Energy and Commodity Management: Manages products used in thermoelectric power plants and other services.
  • Enel X Way: this unit is dedicated to electric vehicle recharging facilities, both private and public transport.

The company generates energy through various sources, from hydroelectric, thermoelectric, wind, geothermal, photovoltaic and nuclear, and is present in 29 countries, with more than 2 million kilometers in its distribution network, giving it a capacity of 88GW, of which 60GW comes from renewable sources.
