Continental AG., es líder en la industria automotriz, específicamente en el sector de la producción de neumáticos y sistemas electrónicos de seguridad, desarrolla tecnologías y servicios asociados a la movilidad, vehículos, transporte, tráfico y maquinaria, es considerada la cuarta empresa más importante en su área luego de Michelin, Bridgestone y Goodyear, posee marcas como Euzkadi, Viking, Continental, General Tire, Gislaved, Semperit, Barum, y Mabor.

Sus inicios datan desde 1871 con la fundación de “Continental-Caoutchouc und Gutta-Percha Compagnie” constituida como sociedad anónima, en 1892 se posiciona como la primera compañía alemana que creaba neumáticos para bicicletas y en 1898 amplía sus actividades a la fabricación de neumáticos para vehículos, luego de algunos problemas durante el período pos guerra logra resurgir al punto que en 1982 realiza asociaciones con consorcios estadounidenses, y compran la división de neumáticos de Semperit en Austria, así como sus subsidiarias, resistiendo a un fuerte intento de adquisición realizado por neumáticos Pirelli en 1993.

En 1995 abren la división CAS “Continental Automotive Systems” donde fabrican chasis controlados electrónicamente, presión de ruedas, sensores de aceleración y sistemas de seguridad para el vehículo, posteriormente en el 2006 incluyen una parte del negocio de Motorola dedicado a la electrónica del automóvil, creciendo al resto de América en el 2009 cuando compran “ERCO la compañía ecuatoriana del Caucho S.A.” cambiándola a Continental Tire Andina S.A.

Actualmente la empresa posee varias divisiones, en las que se especializan en la fabricación de neumáticos para vehículos de pasajeros, comerciales, elastómeros técnicos, sistemas de frenado y chasis, protección interior del conductor y pasajeros, electrónica de tracción y de confort.
