Redes Energéticas Nacionais, SGPS, S.A., also known as REN, is a Portuguese company in charge of the overall management of the public electricity distribution service system, operating and developing projects in the very high voltage network throughout the territory, as well as in the transportation of natural gas, in charge of the management of the high pressure system, the reception and storage of the same, being considered as the second most important company in Portugal in this market which operates through the subsidiary REN Portgás.
Its origins date back to 1947 with the founding of the National Electricity Company CNE, creating in 1994 the foundation REN - Rede Elétrica Nacional, SA, as part of the EDP group, obtaining in 2000 a 50-year concession, thus becoming an autonomous company, acquiring, six years later, natural gas transmission assets from Galp, which has a duration of 40 years, going through several stages of reprivatization, subsequently buying assets and gas and energy businesses.
The company is responsible for managing the transmission of very high voltage electricity in Portugal, as well as the technical maintenance of the National Electricity System SEN, also managing the balance between available capacity and consumption. In addition, thanks to the concession received from the Portuguese state, the company has the power to plan, build, maintain and operate the National Transmission Network (RNT).
In addition, the company develops a series of complementary activities associated with the energy and telecommunications sector, through other subsidiaries such as RENtelecom, El Laboratorio de Metrología de REN Gasodutos, SA, Consultancy and Services, Guarantees of Origin and REN - Trading.
