Description of the company

Galp Energia SGPS S.A. is one of the largest companies in Portugal, responsible for approximately 50% of fuel sales and most of the refinery capacity in that market.

It has its origins in the creation of SONAP in 1933 and SACOR in 1937, which installs its first refinery in Cabo Ruivo, but after the Second World War, due to several financial problems, it receives an important intervention from the Portuguese state, buying four tankers for the company, constituting Soponata in 1947, with SACOR obtaining half of the market.

In 1963 SACOR and SONAP reached an administrative agreement and exchanged shares, being nationalized in 1974, together with Gas Lisboa, handed over to the former overseas provinces and creating the Sociedade de Gestão de Participações Galp, being privatized and assuming control of Petrogal and Gas Portugal.

In 2000 they implemented a strong expansion strategy in Spain, acquiring Esso and Eni, and also began operations in Brazil, collaborating in hydrocarbon exploration through Petrobras and in Angola through Sonangol.

The company is dedicated to treating and refining crude oil, deriving in various products, has direct presence in 10 countries, with more than 6,700 employees, reaching a market capitalization in 2022 of 10.28 billion euros.
