It was founded in 1999 in Argentina by Marcos Galperín, as a Marketplace for Latin America, quickly positioning itself in its country of origin, as well as in Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Uruguay, Ecuador and Peru.

In 2001 eBay became the main shareholder of Mercado Libre, a few years later they bought operations in DeRemate.com, acquired CMG "Classified Media Group and its subsidiaries, entered the real estate market in Chile, and continued to expand until they were active in 18 countries, being ranked in 2022 as one of the 100 most important brands in the world.

Its business model is ecommerce, on whose platform users can offer their items, among which four main lines are categorized, which are Products, Vehicles, Real Estate and Services, each with all the details associated with the description.
