It was created in 1472 in the ancient Republic of Siena, with the purpose of offering a mount of pity, where the victims of the plague were helped and usury was fought, expanding its functions in 1559 when Siena was annexed to Florence, thus forming the Duchy of Tuscany, including activities related to credit for farmers, as well as pawning, becoming a public bank in 1580.
