It was created through the merger between Irish Permanent Building Society and Irish Life Assurance plc, in 1999, although the latter was sold to the state in 2012, in 2001 they acquired Irish Trustee Savings Bank, which belonged to the Government of Ireland, changing its name to Permanent TSB.
In 2020 it reached more than one million customers in its country of origin, achieving in 2022 to receive approval from the "Competition and Consumer Protection Commission" to purchase a portfolio of loans belonging to Ulster Bank, in 2023 they made a strategic review of the business, completely updating the brand, renaming it PTSB.
